My Artwork is a mixture between experiments in colour theory and composition, usually being inspired by locations or objects from real life. Throughout my studies at university I began studying Surrealism and Abstraction, I quickly discovered an interest for Abstraction from nature and explored that to some length. However as time went on I became more interested in colour theory and studied the effects of lines and colour placement to see how this effects each work.
Several artists have inspired me to think and paint in different ways. Artists such as Richard Diebenkorn whose ‘Ocean Park’ series has been of great interest to me, in terms of composition and colour content, and Henri Matisse whose Notre Dame studies have influenced my views on colour. The formatting of my work has been based around my preliminary sketches and my desire to test out a wider variety of sizes to work on. My artist research and formatting changes have helped me discover my own methods of obtaining ideas for compositions and colours, which is something I used to struggled with but I now have a better understanding of.
Another factor I have attempted to include in my work is a sense of space which I believe I have achieved to an extent but I will be working to improve on in the future. I hope to keep developing my work over time and to expand on my ideas. I also wish to become more colour literate as although my skills with colour (and composition) have improved over the last couple of months I know there is still a lot left to learn on this subject.
Overall I believe through my studies of other artists and my personal experimentations in paint I have greatly improved in my painting and my ability to seek out compositions. However I wish to increase my experience with lines, warm and cold tones and creating a sence of space within a painting especially with regards to their ability to help construct both compositions and successful paintings in full.
